the Netherlands 2007

Winterswijk

In July 2007, we undertook a paleomagnetic sampling campaign in the Triassic of the Netherlands. Although there is not much exposure of pre-Quarternary geology, the infamous Muschelkalk quarry of Winterswijk provides an opportunity to determine the Triassic paleoposition of the Netherlands in two time slices: the Anisian (~240 Ma), which is exposed as the top of the Bunter and the base of the Muschelklak, and a thin layer of Rhaetian (~200 Ma) at its top. The results of this small study add to the Triassic apparent polar wander path of Europe, and with over 300 samples, the Triassic paleoposition of the Netherlands will be quite certain...
